Folks, a little post from a cell in the library. I am working on a paper due later this week and was distracted by the beauty of a perfectly blended mash-up. I listen to a lot of dj mash-up tracks and am sharing a few of my favorites.

There are two elements to a successful mash-up track in my book. The first being the ability of the two tracks to sync together and keep the flow of each individual song while creating a new sound that still works. The second factor being the recognition of the two (or more) individual songs. It is never good listen to a mash-up where neither song is recognized. All of these mash-ups fit both factors for me. I have faith in your music knowledge and hope the second factor is met for everyone. If not, I suggest listening to the song you don’t know and re-listen to the mash-up. For me this usually brings more appreciation for the mash-up. Anyways, I think remixes and mash-ups are a lot of fun to listen to. Familiarity with a twist. enjoy

So I started to make one of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face and Jackson’s Smooth Criminal. Its a preview of the fist part only because it was harder that it looked when I started to mix the songs. Beat matching and editing is the hardest as I am not a professional sound mixer. So here is the preview of the first part of the songs. Tell me what you think.

Michael Jackson’s Furniture Planned for Las Vegas Auction

The Gloved One is among a very select group of artists who posthumously remain major wage earners. Nine months after his death, Sony Music Entertainment is paying the the estate of Michael Jackson between $200 and $250 million to release 10 recordings over the next seven years- reportedly the largest ever paid for such a deal.

Adding to his estate’s wealth, 22 items of furniture that were hand-picked for Michael Jackson’s home in Kent, London, accompanying his “This is It” concert series, are going up for auction in Las Vegas, as well as his iconic jeweled gloves.

Some of the items on the auction block include a nine-seat gilt sofa in carved solid wood with red velvet cushions, a 17th century writing desk inlaid with mother-of-pearl, a pair of sunglasses, a military jacket that he wore when he married wife Debbie Rowe in 1996, and Jackson’s white Swarovski Crystal Glove, estimated to go for at least $30,000.

The auction is at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas starting on June 25, and lasts three days, and will also feature other items for sale from other iconic figures in the music industry. Some of the proceeds will go to benefit MusiCares charity and Joshua’s Heart, both charities.

The record-breaking contract runs through 2017 and there are plans for a DVD compilation of videos and a re-release of “Off the Wall,” Jackson’s

fifth studio album, which first came out in 1979, accompanied by some unreleased material. Before his sudden death in June at age 50, the King of Pop had wanted to re-issue the album, sources familiar with the deal said.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting…the deal was made without the estate executors John Branca and John McClain — a 40-year confidant of the entertainer who produced part of Jackson’s 2001 album “Invincible” – is spearheading the selection of an album of previously unreleased material that could hit shelves late this year.

In an interview, Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Entertainment’s Columbia/Epic Label Group, said that his company was confident it would more than recoup its hefty investment, which he characterized as more than just a record deal.

This is a worthy amount for a spectacular artist, who has created a new generation of fans,beyond his grave.

In a time when record labels are suffering due to the changing music purchasing habits of the culture due to internet downloads,new artist are getting cut, but classic,legacy artist like Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley continue to increase their audiences every year, as well as sell hundreds of thousands of compilations and re-mastered albums.

This is most importantly good news for the children of Michael Jackson, who will continue to need his financial support, so they can live.

Michael Jackson continues to be a great dad to Prince, Paris, and “Blanket”(I hope we get to know his actual name!!!), who are his living legacy.

This deal will guarantee that the world will continue to receive the message of LOVE that Michael Jackson forwarded throughout his life,in his music…

At the end of 2009, I rated The Fame Monster at #18 on my year-end album chart. Although I do stand by that chart and I don’t think I would really change any of the albums that are on there, in hindsight Lady GaGa would actually be somewhere in the Top 10 (possibly quite high up). I didn’t think so at the time, but the funny thing about The Fame Monster is that it has hidden depths and its songs are actually really enduring. What’s more, unlike The Fame, the songs are actually about deep topics such as domestic violence (“Dance In The Dark”), intoxication (“So Happy I Could Die”) and poisonous relationships (“Bad Romance”). I find it ironic that I’ve lambasted Lady GaGa for pandering to radio too much with her repetitive nonsense hooks (“p-p-p-poker face / papa-paparazzi / eh eh / ooh la la ga ga ro ma ma” and so on), but now I find myself appreciating her songwriting craft and finding her songs becoming more solid (although The Fame Monster is streets ahead of The Fame, so in a way I’m just acknowledging her artistic progression). So I apologise somewhat for kinda turning off Lady GaGa and not giving her her due (although her fans / “monsters” are quite off-putting and need to be less militant), although if she could keep off the repetition of nonsensical syllables that would be good. Because she doesn’t need to do that.

And so we come to “Telephone”. The song is about suffocating relationships, and Lady GaGa herself has said that it doesn’t just have to be a romantic situation, but could also symbolise the fact that when her telephone rings, it’s always because she has to get back to work in the studio and she can’t escape that. The song itself is pretty strong, although it’s not as progressive as some of the other songs on The Fame Monster and resorts to the 4/4 beat that has completely oversaturated popular music (and did so about a year and a half ago). Beyoncé’s feature is a rapid-fire verse over double-time beats and keeps the song interesting.

The video for “Telephone” was released on Friday, and it has become something of a Pop Event. The hype the video received even before its premiere was immense, and now it’s being hailed by some as the successor to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”. Others however are lambasting it for its apparent sexism and overt lesbianism. I read in one place that you will remember exactly where you were when you first saw it, and that much is true (at least for me). I had just returned home from work, it was about 3:30 and after keeping track of the video reviews on Twitter, I decided to give into my curiosity. Upon the first viewing, I was a tiny bit underwhelmed but could still see the video’s bad and good points (of which my view hasn’t really changed). I thought that Beyoncé’s appearance far outclassed Lady GaGa, not just because Beyoncé has had some acting lessons but also because Beyoncé is more of an effortless star (not in reality, but she doesn’t look as if she’s trying so hard). I detested the overt product placement of Virgin Mobile, Chanel & the GaGa earbud headphones – but all the kids are doing it; I just expected Lady GaGa to have more class. But then why should she? It’s money in the bank, and when your video is 9 and a half minutes long, you need some bank to be able to make that video look and feel effective and powerful.

I’ve rewatched the “Telephone” video a few times now, and each time my estimation of it has gone up. While not exactly on iconic level (I think it’s far too soon to be throwing that word around; GaGa has only been around for 2 years), it’s another demonstration that Lady GaGa’s commitment to her artistry is strong, defiant and interesting. The introductory jail scene serves to debunk the rumours of GaGa’s intersex status (duh), allows her to wear a host of outlandish outfits (striped shoulder-padded body suit / yellow police caution tape / super-studded leather jacket and underwear covered in chains) the best of which is undoubtedly the cigarette sunglasses (still smoking!). The fashion continues with the huge black tricorne hat GaGa sports upon being bailed out of prison; the shredded USA flag (subtle!) clothes in which GaGa and Beyoncé dance in the diner scene; the folded geometric telephone hat and telephone receiver hairdo GaGa wears on her head; the leopardprint body suit à la Shania Twain’s “That Don’t Impress Me Much”; the closing lavender and black body sheets… not all of these ideas work (on a couple of occasions both GaGa and Beyoncé look nothing short of horrendous – for some reason, in the USA flag bikini and bright yellow hair, Lady GaGa reminds me somewhat of Ken from Street Fighter and I can’t shake this association!), but they all capture the viewer’s attention, and more importantly they all leave you with something to say after watching the video. That’s possibly “Telephone”’s biggest success – it provokes thought and inspires discussion. We know this because even the broadsheet newspapers are talking about it.

I stand by my statement that GaGa does seem to be trying awfully hard at being controversial and “artistic”. She’s made a couple of great videos now, but in view of the numerous costume changes (see above), storylines and scenes, it doesn’t seem to come easily. For comparison, where better to look than her costar Beyoncé? For the definition of an iconic music video, look no further than “Single Ladies”; everyone and their mama has seen that video and knows the dance. The video is in black and white, has no storyline or costumes (other than a leotard and metallic glove), is done in one take and isn’t even an original idea (see Bob Fosse’s choreography on youtube). Most importantly, Beyoncé did it almost as an afterthought to her video for “If I Were A Boy” (which in my opinion is a truly beautiful, excellent video) without breaking a sweat; and yet this is the video that captured everyone’s attention. Now, of course Beyoncé is not anywhere near as effortless as she appears; but she makes it look easy. GaGa does not make it look easy, and although it’s admirable that she’s so committed to the symbolism and artistic integrity she conveys (and GaGa is clearly an intelligent and talented woman), I’m scared that because the media and the fans are so interested in her image, her look, and what she’s going to be wearing that they forget that Lady GaGa is actually a singer and a musician – the most important thing should be her music. Which, as I said at the top, is actually quite good and shouldn’t get lost in all of the surrounding gloss, however layered and substantial that gloss may be. What happens when Lady GaGa can’t get any crazier? What about when she wants to strip away all the layers and be more vulnerable and natural? Will everyone turn away from her then, because they just wanted the fancy clothes and elaborate videos? Can people not listen to her music, her lyrics without the accompanying visual? I hope I’m wrong, because if not then that’s pretty sad.

The storyline, just as the lyrics of the song itself, can be interpreted in various ways and I’m not going to get into that here; I think that some of the reviews I’ve read have been hilariously in-depth and I think that GaGa is intelligent enough to play along in pretending to have input heavy symbolism into outfits, storylines and lyrics where there is none; people seem to need to have a meaning to every single thing, whereas I often think that GaGa is just having fun and being crazy. Which is great! It’s entertainment. And the “Telephone” video is certainly entertaining; I hated the product placement, and I don’t feel that the use of the Pussy Wagon was necessary (the Tarantino homages are apparent, with elements of Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction included) – but then that’s just because I find the Pussy Wagon unfeasibly garish. Which, in Kill Bill, was the point, and I understand that. I really enjoyed Beyoncé’s homages to the “Paparazzi” video in her poisoning the teacup, Minnie Mouse glasses and hand over her mouth when they censored the swearing. I loved the Japanese cooking-programme style of “Let’s Make A Sandwich”, and the dialogue between Gaga and Beyoncé was intriguingly half-cheesy, half-half-boiled (although Beyoncé can somewhat act, and Lady GaGa really can’t – yet). Tyrese and Beyoncé’s subtitled conversation, spoken with only looks and facial expressions, was genius. The Thelma & Louise-esque ending neatly gave closure to the video, but also made viewers wonder what was in store (that “To Be Continued…”) for next time.

Overall, I thought that the “Telephone” video was excellent, and I’m intrigued to see how the music channels edit it down to song length. It’s a thrilling watch, and while I’m not going to pretend that it is a perfect video, I think that to compare it to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is unfair; “Thriller” is not even Michael Jackson’s best video by a long shot, and Lady GaGa’s video deserves to stand in its own right. ”Telephone” is furiously entertaining, and shows an artist coming into her own, even if at this point the numerous costume changes and persistent homages, product placements and edgy fashion poses betray an artist not quite comfortable enough in her own skin to exude her artistry naturally. Once it becomes a little more effortless (as it has for Beyoncé, Madonna and all the other greats), that’s when Lady GaGa will be iconic and symbolic of a new musical generation. But she’s well on her way, and I hope that the media, fans and public will appreciate that, because I myself am learning to, little by little.

ps. If only my “Bad Romance” video treatment had ended in a jail rather than in a mental institution, it would have led perfectly into the “Telephone” video! Ah well, can’t win ‘em all

8 gleanings from Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds live at Mosaic

When performing your band live – bring a tight skilled band with you, and make sure they are well rehearsed. This made a world of difference in bringing his best to the songs that we all know and loved. Since he had no BV’s (Backing Vocalists) other than the bass player at a couple of parts, a stripped down BV and percussion track was layered underneath the band acting as their metronome and their guide through the songs. So they had to know their stuff.
Class is timeless. I remember vaguely a conversation with my friends back in NZ about 17 years ago, and we were talking about which celebrities dress style we wanted to emulate at the time. I remember names like Boyz 2 Men, Big Daddy Kane Bell Biv Devoe and even MC Hammer were tossed around. I remember telling em that I liked the dress style of Babyface and After 7, because they dressed classy. Everyone thought I was wack and an old head. Though the Hammer pants are reemerging I don’t know if I’d wanna wear what BBD was wearing back then.
Songwriting is where it’s at. The most common comment from concert goers was – I didn’t know he wrote all those songs.
You limited for time in your performance? Medley up the songs from a particular era – leave em wanting more! The medley for me was most definitely the highlight of the whole show. He took us way back through his days with the Deele (and a hilarious R Kelly short spot) before launching into a medley of songs he wrote around the 87-91 days for other artists beginning with “Two Occasions” and then going through a barrage that included “My, my, my”, “Ready or Not”, “Don’t Be Cruel”, “Roni”, “Rock Witchya” and “End of the Road” amongst others. By doing only a verse, chorus and bridge of each, he had the crowd going wild like a good dj and a tightened mix-tape.
Engage your audience Most singer/songwriters lose the audience with lengthy song explanations. Babyface engaged us by going chronologically through his life in presenting his songs.
Take em back and pay tribute to your influences He paid tribute, mentioning Motown artsts, yet covering artists that were only important to him: James Taylor, Eric Clapton (both artists songs featured on works Babyface had done), and of course, Michael Jackson. Each tribute was wonderfully explained in what was happening in his life when he was first influenced by these artists. It also allows for the audience to understand the importance of the influence in their sound.
Push yourself as a musician to be greater We already knew he was a great pianist and singer. But forgive me for not picking up on his guitar playing swag. Dude can play!
Unless your name is Michael Jackson, the best musical performances are where the music takes centre stage! Nothing but good music last night – and all who came were indeed fulfilled by a great performance from one of the biggest songwriters of our generation.

One of the best concerts I’ve been to, and yes I’m glad I went to this instead of Breakestra. Not that it would’ve been wack either, but I knew I needed to be at Babyface, and get inspired to write, and stretch myself as a musician, much like Michael did for him.

Why would an experienced drug user overdose?

After all, once an individual uses drugs over a long period they come to understand what to expect from doses.

I’ve worked as a drug counselor or college professor on the topic since 1985.

The answer to the overdose question lies mostly in the dynamics of getting high and addiction.

Some commonly used drugs of abuse cause the user to develop physical tolerance. Tolerance means it takes more of the substance to get the same effect. This is a physical dynamic, the body adapts to the substance and it simply takes more and more of it to produce the desired high.

Sometimes the user, depending on the substance, progresses to the point where the dose they are taking has come dangerously close to the fatal dose. One day they take too much and the nervous system slows down or speeds up and breathing stops or a heart attack occurs.

Elvis Presley had gotten to the point of taking a “six-pack” cocktail to go to bed. Most of the drugs in the cocktail caused tolerance. On August 16, 1977, he couldn’t sleep and asked for a second six-pack. That dose probably came too close to the first and Elvis’s heart stopped.

There’s something else.

The dynamic of getting high also leaves the user with always wanting to experience more, better, intensified, bigger highs. Their first use of alcohol led to the desire to try pot which led to a curiousity to try, say, cocaine which turned into a desire for freebasing and on and on. The desire to alter one’s consciousness keeps upping the ante.

John Belushi loved cocaine and one night kept upping the ante with heroin to experience the speedball effect of combining an upper and a downer.

Michael Jackson appears to have been dependent on painkillers but also progressed to anesthesia–which is a wildly significant progression and ridiculously dangerous.

What about suicide?

Sometimes users decide to kill themselves but more often they get sloppy with their use. Sometimes they mix desires and think to themselves that if they get really high and don’t wake up it wouldn’t be so bad.

Sometimes a user gets a new dealer or a dealer gets a new supplier. Street drugs are wildly inconsistent in the amount of the actual mind altering substance contained in them. The same amount of heroin injected on a Monday may look like Tuesday’s dose but it might actually be double. That causes overdose.

Drugs differ in what they do in the body. Some classes of drugs don’t have a physical tolerance. Marijuana, LSD and XTC don’t cause physical tolerance though they certainly can cause the user to develop a psychological tolerance. Medically speaking, cocaine doesn’t have a tolerance or a withdrawal dynamic but if you ask anyone who’s gotten addicted to it they’d argue with you quite a bit.

People don’t die from smoking a lot of marijuana or tripping a lot. Alcohol, narcotic analgesics, barbiturates and benzodiazepines all cause tolerance.

We’ll find out about Corey Haim after toxicology reports come in.

If it shows that drugs caused his death he won’t be alone.

Lindsay Lohan - Stock For $100 Million Please!

Lindsay Lohan is suing internet stock giant eTrade Financial for a cool $100,000,000. That’s a lot of zeros. But does she have a case? On a personal, yet still unbiased opinion I think she DOES contrary to popular belief. The uproar is about a recent eTrade commercial featuring those talking babies that I thought were funny in the beginning but not anymore. The woman behind the voice states “…and that milkaholic Lindsay wasn’t over?” In baby terms a “Milkaholic” would be that of an “Alcoholic” to adults. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who they’re referring too. A lot of people are saying she’s a washed up actress, no one likes her yadda-yadda-yadda, but that is irrelevant to this particular issue.

Case in point. If you’re in coversation with somebody and you mention “Paris, Audrina, Miley and yes, Lindsay”, the other person knows who you’re talking about. Although they aren’t Michael Jackson status, they still are part of the first name only club. Case in point part dos. It took me all of about .30 seconds to prove this to myself as well. Google-ing the word “Lindsay” pulls up over 51 MILLION results with you know who as the top spot.

So point proven that the media cannot say it wasn’t about her. Owned. Moving to the money situation. Hell if it was me too I’d want $100M! But lets be serious even she knows she won’t get that. What people fail to realize is that celebs have a team of lawyers working for them and that’s the strategy you’re supposed to aim high then work your way down. I honesty feel she has a valid case with valid points and even if she gets $10k, a win is a win.

I definitely grew up loving Michael Jackson and his music. I was very young when Thriller came out but I knew it was my # 1 favorite song. I loved watching his music videos and his awesome dance moves.

It’s kind of funny how things always come full circle and now that I am writing an All Things Crystal blog, I am realizing how modern and ahead of the curve he really was. Way back when, people including myself thought Michael was a little crazy for wearing all of the crystal sparkle that he did. Especially as a male, it really wasn’t something that you saw other males doing on or off the stage.

Now that he’s gone his legacy still remains of course, but most importantly all of his sparkly attire (which at the time was made with Swarovski Crystals by the way) are now all up for bid and selling for a very large amount of money.

Now you see men everywhere rocking crystal sparkle! Especially with the rise in popularity of clothing lines like Ed Hardy’s menswear with Swarovski Crystal designs, we’re about 20 years too late!

Brown Announces Arrests of Nursing Home Employees Who Drugged and Killed Patients for Staff’s Convenience

BAKERSFIELD -Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced the arrests of a nurse, physician, and a pharmacist of a nursing home for “forcibly administering” psychotropic medications for their own convenience, rather than for their patients’ therapeutic interests, actions that are alleged to have resulted in the deaths of three residents.

“These people maliciously violated the trust of their patients, by holding them down and forcibly administering psychotropic medications if they dared to question their care,” Attorney General Brown said. “This is appalling behavior, which amounts to assault with a deadly weapon.”

Earlier today, California Department of Justice special agents arrested three individuals:

- Gwen Hughes, the former Director of Nursing at the skilled nursing facility of the Kern Valley Healthcare District in Lake Isabella, Kern County on charges of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon.

- Debbi Hayes, the former pharmacist at the Valley Healthcare District, on charges of elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon.

- Dr. Hoshang Pormir, a staff physician at Kern Valley Healthcare District, who was serving as the medical director of the skilled nursing facility, on charges of elder abuse.

Upon taking over as Director of Nursing in September 2006, Gwen Hughes ordered that Alzheimer’s and other dementia patients be given high doses of psychotropic medications to make them more tranquil and easy to control. She ordered the administration of these medications to patients who argued with her, were noisy, or who were otherwise disruptive. Two patients who resisted were held down and forcibly given injections.

Ms. Hughes is also alleged to have directed Debbi Hayes, the hospital pharmacist, to fill prescriptions for these psychotropic medications. Hayes wrote and filled these prescriptions without first obtaining a doctor’s approval.

Dr. Hoshang Pormir approved these psychotropic medications only some time after they had been administered and without examining the patients first and determining whether these psychotropic medications were medically necessary.

Several of these patients are alleged to have had medical complications as a result of being given these psychotropic medications, including lethargy and the inability to eat or drink properly. It is believed that that three patients died and one patient suffered great bodily injury as a result.

The investigation

Kern Valley Healthcare District operates a small community hospital and skilled nursing facility in Lake Isabella. The case came to the attention of authorities in January 2007, when an ombudsman reported to the Bakersfield office of the California Department of Public Health that a patient in the skilled nursing facility had been held down and given an injection of psychotropic medication by force.

The Department of Public Health immediately sent an investigative team with a doctor, a nurse, and a doctor of pharmacology. They determined that 22 patients, including some who were suffering from Alzheimer’s at the skilled nursing facility, were being given high doses of psychotropic medication not for therapeutic reasons, but to simply control and quiet them for the convenience of the staff.

The Department of Public Health issued a Certificate of Immediate Jeopardy which resulted in the immediate dismissal of the Ms. Hughes. The matter was then turned over to the California Department of Justice, Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse.

Special Agents from the Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse began a year-long investigation, with the co-operation and assistance of the Department of Public Health and the administration of the Kern Valley Healthcare District.

A search warrant was served on the facility in August 2008, resulting in the seizure of numerous medical files and records.

Criminal charges were filed in Kern County Superior Court. The defendants are being held in Kern County Jail in Bakersfield. They will be arraigned on Friday. If convicted, the defendants could face up to 11 years in prison.

The case is being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s Bureau of Medi-Cal Fraud and Elder Abuse, with the co-operation and assistance of the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

Thankfully I wasn’t called in, so I actually was able to rest. I think this may be the first time I’ve been able to rest and hopefully flush this bug out of my system. I was great! I did get some odd jobs done around the house, something I’ve been meaning to do in the past forever! I cleaned the lip of my washing machine! Man it was dis- wait for it- gusting! Not to worry, my smile is for being lazy, not cleaning, although it felt so good to do! I got my shows back as well, after the madness of the Olympics, it’s nice to laugh rather than cry with swells of emotions!

Joe Jackson and Family Seek Michael's Medical Records In Wrongful Death Claim

Joe Jackson in pursuit of his son’s death records wants the judge assigned to the Michael Jackson Estate Case to acknowledge the father’s right to sue media outlets for publishing photos of his dead son.

Jackson’s estate executors expressed outrage, and said access to medical reports would violate Michael’s physician-patient privilege as well as his fundamental privacy rights.

Joe argued MJ’s UCLA Medial Center records aren’t governed by doctor-patient confidentiality since the pop star was brought dead to the hospital. Jackson family lawyer, Brian Oxman, filed legal documents claiming legal precedent allows a family to sue in such a case. Oxman’s filing is also aimed at allowing Joe to file a wrongful death action “against the people who caused his son’s death.”

Executors response to Jackson, who is requesting funds from his son’s estate to finance his investigation into the singer’s death, is that he is attempting to gain access to the records by making his request in a suit which he initially sought to gain a monthly stipend from the estate, that has nothing to do with wrongful death or medical records.

They further stated that Joe Jackson is not listed as a beneficiary of Michael Jackson’s estate and therefore has no right to sue on his son’s behalf; and that he is not entitled to a family allowance and thus cannot be paid an allowance to prosecute a wrongful death action.

The elder Jackson argued that wife, Katherine — who called Dr. Conrad Murray, the man accused of killing their son, a “monster” — and MJ’s children — one of whom offered to testify at Dr. Murray’s trial — are in fact beneficiaries of the estate and support him in his request to the court.

Sister La Toya Jackson seemingly speaking for the family said “Michael was murdered and although he died at the hands of Dr. Conrad Murray, I believe Dr. Murray was a part of a much larger plan. There are other individuals involved and I will not rest, and I will continue to fight until all of the proper individuals are brought forth and justice is served.”

The Judge assigned to the Michael Jackson estate case delayed issuing a ruling on the patriarch’s request for medical records asking for further time to consider the arguments put forward by Joe’s lawyer. He is expected to announce his decision in a matter of days.

Let me start this post off by saying that with the remake of the We Are the World I hope that a ton of money is raised to aid the folks in Haiti. Now that I’ve got that out of the way, here’s how I feel about the remake: it bloody sucks. Yes, I said it.

So there I was last week with my telly blaring done the hall as I worked on the computer and then I heard the beginning strains of the “new” We Are The World and started thinking … hey, now that not’s so bad. Several seconds later, I regret that thought as I heard streaming from my telly what seemed to be mixed-mash cacophony of chaos passing for music. Seriously mates, it was horrid. It sounded like the bloody song mutated and had a bout of tourette’s. Dear, oh dear.

It is safe to say that it was a case of good intentions. Unfortunately, when folks decided to muck it up by adding their “uniqueness” to it (read: rap), well it sort of bollocksed it all up. The beauty of the original one was that it was smooth, seamless and everyone seemed to sing of one voice despite their musical backgrounds. In the new remake, it seemed like everyone wanted to do their own thing, and instead of We Are the World it came of sound like We Are The Tower of Babel. Sorry, the older version was pristine and masterfully done. I understand that this was done from the heart with good intentions and all that good stuff, but I am afraid that there are somethings under these blue skies that are not meant to be changed. Sorry.

Usher Making The NBA All-Star Game Worth Watching.

Even though the start of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver are dominating most sports headlines this weekend, the NBA will be wrapping up their All-Star festivities in Dallas, Texas with their annual clash between the best players from the East and the West Conferences. The All-Star game will definitely be entertaining, but I have never really been a fan of it, or any All-Star games for that matter. The fact that these games are glorified exhibition contests (even though the MLB game counts) has never appealed to me. However, during half-time, Usher Raymond is going to give the fans at the New Cowboys Stadium and the rest of us watching at home something worth tuning in for.

Alicia Keys and Shakira will also be performing in Dallas tonight, but they will both be singing some of their most recent songs for the audience; Usher will not only be performing his hit single “More,” (which was used as part of the NBA All-Star game promo), but he will also sing his hit song “Yeah,” from his 2004 album, Confessions. This is just going to be the latest performance by Usher, who has a new album coming out on March 30th, entitled Raymond v. Raymond.

Usher is my favorite artist of all time, so not only am I excited for his newest album to drop in stores next month, but I love just about anything he does. A lot of critics feel that this album will be his best since Confessions because most of the material in his songs will be about his recent divorce from Tameka Fisher. There is no question that Usher is a much better artist when his songs are about heartbreak, rather than his songs about being in love. So, even though I’m sad that his marriage had to end in divorce and his two kids will have to deal with it as well, I’m a little excited to hear his new songs because I know he’s going to capitalize on this sad transgression in his life… just look at Confessions.

Now that Michael Jackson’s time on Earth has ended, people will soon be eager to crown a new King of Pop. Jay-Z was quoted recently saying that Usher is the artist that is most worthy of taking over this title. If that somehow becomes official, I know that will be quite the emotional time for him since Jackson was such a huge influence on both his life and career. I totally agree with Jay-Z and think that this should happen; once Raymond v. Raymond hits the stores and Usher rises to the top of the charts, calling him the King of Pop will only be a matter of time.

Watch the NBA All-Star game tonight at 8p on TNT- not for the exhibition game, but to see one of the best artists of our time perform.

Joe Jackson, LaToya: Murray Apart of Conspiracy to Murder Michael: Freemason and Cabal Connections

Michael Jackson’s former personal physician Conrad Murray turned himself in at a branch courthouse near Los Angeles International Airport Monday, pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter of Jackson and was released from jail after posting $75,000 bail.

Michael’s father Joe Jackson and mother Katherine appeared in court along with siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Randy.

Joe Jackson and his attorney Brian Oxman spoke to Larry King on “Larry King Live” later that day declaring Murray should be charged with the more severe charge of Murder II, and Murray was apart of a conspiratorial plot to kill the late musician.

“To me, he’s just a fall guy. There’s other people, I think, involved with this whole thing. But I think that [once] he’s interrogated – he would come clean and tell everything he knows,” Joe Jackson told King Monday.

“I was looking for justice, and justice, to me, would be the murder charge.”

“Michael said to himself that he would be killed, and he told his mother that. ‘Cause he’s afraid that ah, he was afraid, to even do all of these shows, because he was afraid that he wouldn’t get a chance to finish all of the show because he couldn’t,” Joe Jackson said referring to the 50-date residency at London’s O2.

“He couldn’t do all those shows back-to-back. Even his kids say that he had told them that he would be murdered.”

Joe blamed “a whole slew of” people along with Murray for Michael’s death including Frank DiLeo and Dr. Tohme Tohme.

LaToya Jackson also issued a statement after the hearing Monday stating that other people were involved in Michael’s death.

“Michael was murdered and although he died at the hands of Dr. Conrad Murray, I believe Dr. Murray was apart of a much larger plan. There are other individuals involved and I will not rest and I will continue to fight until all of the proper individuals are brought forth and justice is served,” LaToya wrote.

Jermaine Jackson told CNN Monday the involuntary manslaughter charge is “not enough.”

A complaint filed by prosecutors claims that Murray “did unlawfully, and without malice, kill Michael Joseph Jackson” by acting “without due caution and circumspection required” when administering the prescription drugs in question.

Michael had told people, such as his mother, prior to his murder that he was afraid he would be poisoned.

Also, Michael had stated in several interviews, including with Martin Bashir, that he believed there was a conspiratorial plot against him to slander him, silence him and eventually murder him because he would not go along with the wishes of the conspirators.

Murray is a member of the Freemasons according to Fox News; a centuries-old fraternal order with members including numerous heads of state in the Western World, wealthy business people and local middle-class citizens.

In July Fox reported Murray’s friends told their news group that since joining this fraternal order three years ago “this new network galvanized his growing side business [his traveling medical concierge business]” and placed him within the network of AEG LIVE executives in-charge of Michael’s forthcoming London concerts who recommended Murray to Michael.

A theory swirling around the world is that the Masonic organization Murray belongs to brought him connections with powerful people within the recording companies and touring agencies that are also members of that organization, and they conspired together to continuously drug Michael, sway him to assign his rights to music copyrights and other income streams over to them while under the influence of drugs.

Under closer examination of numerous current music videos and performances from the musicians employed by the few big American music companies, one can find a blatant recurring theme of allusions to Freemasonry and Illuminati lending credence to the theory.

Michael’s later work, such as the video for “They Don’t Care About Us” included allusions to battling against a sinister cabal, such as the Illuminati.

Let me say this. I’m not a football fan. I could give a rat’s a*% who wins. To me the Super Bowl is just another day to yell at the TV, eat a lot of food and drink. Sounds like my typical weekend. However, I always look forward to the commercials and the halftime performances. Here are my top 3 performances from Super Bowl memory lane:

3. I don’t think you can talk about the Super Bowl Halftime Show without talking about the Janet Jackson performance. Now let me say this. Yes, it was the breast seen around the world. Yes, you forgot about every other performance that night. Yes, it was a “WTF” moment in Super Bowl halftime history. But regardless of the malfunction, she put on a great show………period! I hate the fact that Janet took a hard fall to something that really wasn’t a big deal. Plus during the aftermath, Justin Timberlake played the situation like a Maury Povich guest who just got the results from a paternity test (you “are” the baby’s father). Didn’t JT apologize 50 years later about how he handled the situation?!?! What the hell?!? Anyway, despite all that, I still stand on the fact that Janet put on a great show. If it wasn’t for Janet, Britney Spears wouldn’t know who to copy.

2. I just love this performance by Prince. Between his guitar solo behind the sheet and the Marching 100, this was a jaw dropping show. I don’t know if he scheduled the rain with his “Purple Rain” performance but it really works . Plus he’s the only dude with heels and your mama’s headrag who still looks good. I’m serious!!! I mean that with all sincerity and no humorous malice. I love Prince!!!! How does he do that?!? I’m in awe.

1. You can’t have a post about Super Bowl halftime without having the “one” who’s done it better than anyone else!!! That’s the one and only Michael Jackson. This dude stands still for 1 to 2 minutes “letting it simmer” and thousands are screaming like they won a check from Publishing Clearing House. Do you hear me!?!? Who else can do that??? Only Michael!

The 1985 charity anthem “We are the World” has new life and a new sound.

More than 75 mega-stars gathered Monday to re-record the song in the same Hollywood recording studio where the original was cut 25 years ago.

Pink, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, the Jonas Brothers, Kanye West, Tony Bennett, Jennifer Hudson, Akon and other musical luminaries stood shoulder to shoulder on risers at Henson Recording studios.

At one point during the session, the musicians broke out into an a cappella version of the pop classic “Lean on Me.”

True to her diva reputation, Barbara Streisand recorded her solo over and over, completely absorbed in the recording process and stopping only to correct her pitch.

Quincy Jones announced last week that he planned to redo the song to benefit earthquake recovery in Haiti.

The original was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie.

Last month, Jenna told me that she had the best Christmas present for me ever and that when she saw it, she HAD to buy it. Ok, you have my attention. But she wouldn’t tell me what it was. “Just don’t make plans on December 26th,” she said. Well, I obviously knew that we were going someplace, and it was probably tickets of some kind.

On Saturday, December 26, 2009, at 6:15pm, Jenna pulled into my driveway, walked in, threw something at me and says, “Put this on,” a Michael Jackson t-shirt. I did and then gave her the Christmas present that I bought her, handmade Zombie-Hand Earrings!

Then she told me where we were going – TO SEE JOBY ROGERS – THE ULTIMATE MICHAEL JACKSON EXPERIENCE! If you have never heard of Joby Rogers, he is the best, hands-down, Michael Jackson impersonator around, not only that, he’s from Meriden, Connecticut! And small world, Jenna’s boyfriend use to work at Tommy K’s in Meriden, where Joby would frequent back in the day.

Since the early 1980’s, since he was 17 years old, Joby Rogers has been impersonating Michael. At some point after the kid’s birthday parties and Broadway shows, he was chosen by Michael Jackson, himself, to serve as his official double based on Joby’s appearance, mannerisms, voice, and dance moves.

Excited for the show!

The show was absolutely amazing. The place was packed and I’m not sure if I saw a single open seat from where we were sitting! Joby would perform a song or two, then run off stage, where I could only imagine he was doing a quick costume change and having his makeup reapplied. You see Joby is actually a dark skinned man, so to impersonate Michael later in his career he must get airbrushed frequently. While he was offstage they played one or two of Michael’s music videos or they had the dancers perform to one of the songs alone to entertain the crowd.

And to top off an excellent night, afterwards we went and played the slot machines. Jenna was only on for 3 minutes and the machine was eating her money like crazy, but THEN SHE HIT FOR $300! A lucky end to a great MJ filled night!

Oh – And of course they did “THRILLER!”

What is life all about? Why the heck are we faced with all these challenges and beautiful moments?

Hmm….I can’t say for sure, and that’s putting it nicely, so I’ll simply put it this way:

I don’t know. What I’ve come to learn is that while nothing is guaranteed, we’ve got to live our lives the way that feels right to each of us, no matter what’s going on. Sure – I know I speak a good game, but it’s true. That said, we’ve got to jump through a ton of hoops to enjoy life in this society, and I’m really not complaining, per se.

I might sound like I’m preaching at moments in my diary here, but believe me – I’m just like you, where I’m trying to figure out just how the hell to be happy, as complicated (or ironically simple) as that pursuit may end up proving to be.

I’m deep, yeah I know…But so are a million others out there. This is why I even bother working hard to get my book out there: Because there are other “Jeff Emmerson’s” out there, and they need to (deserve to) know that there are people just like them out there…People who want more from life, and people who wonder…

Golden Globes 2010: Mariah Carey and Halle Berry Wear Plunging Dresses. Who Got it Right?

As any woman who’s tried it knows, showing cleavage can be tricky. And, as a pair of stars at the Golden Globes demonstrated, the task can be trickier for some than for others.

Exhibit A: The notoriously skin-baring and buxom Mariah Carey — who walked the red carpet with husband/umbrella holder Nick Cannon (10 years her junior) — donned a Hervé Léger by Max Azria curve-hugging long black dress with plunging V-neckline, putting her business front and center.

Unfortunately, with the 39-year-old “Precious” star’s breasts being so out there, it was easy to miss the fashionable elements of her ensemble, including diamond and platinum chandelier earrings by Chopard, a stack of diamond bracelets and the totally on-trend power shoulders of her bandage dress.

On the flip side, 43-year-old award ceremony presenter Halle Berry took the plunge in a Kaufman Franco silk bias cut gown with lace inserts that was actually cut lower than Carey’s Léger look and quite similar in style, yet the actress managed to look sexy, not sleezy.

The difference? Berry has a smaller chest and therefore less cleavage, so her girls were under control and she avoided giving off a desperate “check out my goods!” vibe.

The day has arrived. Sunday January 24th, the world will finally catch a glimpse of music artist Lil Mama’s 21st birthday celebration and Engineered by Remy’s custom made, and Michael Jackson inspired, “Bad” Jacket chosen to be the center of Lil Mama’s look for the event.

For those who don’t know about the intense yet exciting process to completion of this unique jacket, check out The Birth of MJ’s “BAD” Jacket (Part One). In a nutshell designer Remy Hou had only four days, a variety of setbacks and only one shot to impress Lil Mama and her stylist Jason Griffin. Racing against the clock to produce the perfect look for the artist’s MTV taping wasn’t easy but was it worth it?

The second the product was shipped and on its way to MTV’s New York City studios, Remy had no clue what the final reaction would be. So did he succeed?…..

“Griffin loved it!,” said Remy.

Amazed at the quality of work within the 72 hour window for production (day four was all about last minute inspections and shipment clear across the country), the jacket was a hit! Lil Mama had yet to see it but everyone including her dancers was in awe.

“Griffin mentioned that I did a wonderful job. He was impressed…and the fact that I was able to win the heart of a New Yorker, that was the most important part,” said Remy.

While the design surpassed the crew’s expectations with flying colors the final verdict was yet to be heard from the birthday girl herself, Lil Mama. When she finally saw it…she was shocked! And definitely in a good way.

“For me to make something to go along with Michael Jackson and [Lil Mama’s] work was complete bliss,” said Remy. “The fit was perfect, everything could not have been better. Her look was that of a superstar.”

I’ve been having major problems with my net connection all day, so I’m going to quickly put this entry up without a lot of my chatter to take advantage of this possibly small window of things being stable. Thanks to Kelley for bringing the material commentary to my attention.

The celebrity photographer and artist David LaChapelle had always wanted to take a portrait of Michael Jackson, and nearly did: several shoots were lined up and cancelled as Jackson grew increasingly wary. “Photographers weren’t nice to him,” says LaChapelle. “He got scared.”

After Jackson’s death LaChapelle decided to pay tribute, photographing a young lookalike in Hawaii, just outside his own home: a 25-acre ranch on the coast, three hours from the nearest shop. He moved there three years ago, turning his back on lucrative contracts with Vanity Fair, Italian Vogue and Rolling Stone. The “devil” in red is a friend who performs in the Cirque du Soleil. The image forms part of a trilogy inspired by Mexican saint cards. LaChapelle is convinced that Jackson was an innocent man.

“I don’t think he was capable of hurting anyone,” he says. “I think there’s something really biblical about what happened. His lyrics are so naive and so beautiful. It’s one of the most epic stories of our time, to go from such heights to such depths. He’s a modern-day martyr.”

LACHAPELLE: I have an image of Michael Jackson as an archangel, where I didn’t even photograph him. He was a person living in biblical extremes: the most famous person on the planet, beloved in an almost devotional way, who then fell almost to the lowest depths of society; going from a dark skinned black man to a pale skinned white man… and all the while singing these songs about healing!

In the Martin Bashir interview, there’s a kid with cancer without any hair. Then you see him later and he’s better, and his family said that it was Michael’s belief that cured him. Which, I’m Catholic, and healing the sick is one of the criteria for sainthood. Not to say that he really was a saint, but he was so otherworldly and certainly fits the requirements for martyrdom… He really brings into question all of these issues of gender and race, which are such hot button issues of society. Why can’t a man hold a child’s hand? Does it have to be erotic? I think that says as much about society as it does about him.

MILLER: So you created a portrait without Michael ever sitting for you? It sounds more like an effigy.

LACHAPELLE: For the picture I mentioned before, I used a Michael Jackson impersonator and spent weeks and weeks moving pixels around to create the face of Michael Jackson circa 1990. It’s a photograph, but it’s a not a portrait, so it sort of redefines what a photograph is. We spent so much time going back in and putting in details and flaws, and there’s no question that it’s Michael Jackson. But he never posed for it. It’s a very strange concept. In a way, it’s going back to painting. So it was time to go back to these more raw things like the collages.

in english class we’re all presenting a song that means something to us and today a girl from my class presented a Michael Jackson song. it was totally okay with me because i love him and he was one of my greatest heroes and still is. the problem though was that my teacher then wanted to talk about him and how we had reacted upon his death. the truth – i’m not over his death yet. every time i see him or has to talk about his death i start crying. so all i did was sitting in the back of the room without saying anything because if i did i would start crying and embarrass myself in front of everyone. i wish i could just get over it soon and go back to my normal relaxed fandom. but i miss him so much. <3

..another problem i have is this guy i think, i like. the reason i say think is because i have been single for the past five years and i don’t know it i like him because i’m beginning to be desperate or if i really do like him. anyways.. i was at a party in november and i danced with him and couple of my friends and afterward he came up to us and said something (i don’t exactly remember what it was. i think it was something about how good we were) and i answered him (but i don’t remember what i said either) and then he just stood there staring at me before some girl pulled him away and my friends and i left. ever since i’ve been keeping an eye on him (that sounds so wrong) at school and i think he looks at me a lot but i can’t really tell because when i like someone, i have the ability to see what i want to see. then last friday i was at another party and he was there too but this time he didn’t even look at me once. it made me really depressed and i left early. i can’t go anywhere at school without thinking about if he is somewhere near me and when i sit in the hall (where we eat lunch) i can’t keep my eyes off of him. oh my! i’m desperate, aren’t i? geez.. sometimes i could just hit myself. i hope it’s faith’s way of telling me to not get attached to a guy before i really figure life out.

This one’s up for the public vote as well – as if one complete crapshoot wasn’t enough. As for a prediction… my stab in the dark would be Coldplay.

Well per Isaac Newton what goes up, for damn sure go’s down. With that we can clearly say that that which is famous could just as readily become INfamous. A leaked and verified copy of Michael Jackson’s death certificate confirms what has been reported since August: that the iconic singer’s June 25 passing was due to “acute propofol intoxication” and “intravenous injection by another.” In other words: homicide.

Making someone accountable for the death has dominated the headlines, with an AP report claiming Friday that prosecutors are close to indicting Dr. Conrad Murray, who, according to court documents, administered the propofol. It’s widely believed Murray would be brought up on charges of involuntary manslaughter. But a spokesman for the L.A. district attorney’s office told EW it was a “bogus report” and that they “don’t have the case” to bring charges against Murray yet. Further, Murray’s spokeswoman said they have not been informed of any grand jury proceedings.

Actor Charlie Sheen put a knife to his wife’s throat and threatened to kill her in a fight that began over Christmas, she told police.

he hasn’t said shit about what happened and she has come out and said ” oh maybe i was drinking a lil too much” hahahaha when the police breath tested her she blew .1 8 or some shit close to enough alcohol to drown a 10 year old child.

So the story goes…….Charlie spent much of Christmas Day in a cell after he apparently attacked Brooke Mueller Sheen when she asked him for a divorce. Arrest papers quote Mrs Sheen saying the Two and Half Men star had straddled her on a bed and held her down. The 44-year-old denied threatening his wife with a knife or choking her.

Ok so number one, he could get another wife just as hot if not hotter so why car about a divorce, she lied!

Gramatically-incorrect, but who cares?!

We’ ain’t done just yet, Writers Build is still in full effect!

And you probably thought all I listened to was hip-hop.. Ha! Gotcha.

In between spinning Mos Def and Raekwon this year, me and my homie Jaap van der Doelen (of The Rap Up and Maasland FM fame) took some time to expand our horizons beyond the realm of rap. What we found were some extremely great projects by a gang of non-hip-hoppers.

Our lists cover many typesof music, including R&B, pop, reggae, soul, dubstep, jazz, rock and even afro-funk (yes, I may have made that genre up, but it’s true). Check these out when you’re not in the mood for neck-snapping beats or lyrical onslaughts.

My 2010 Predictions

Most people, including myself, are delighted that 2009 is finally over. The reasons include the hemorrhaging of the United States and global economies, the rise in unemployment, and the strange frequency of celebrity deaths. At last, we can look forward to a new year, a fresh start, a glimmer of hope for conditions to improve. My predictions for this “Year of the Tiger” in 2010 are for the economy to get better, new jobs to be created, and less celebrities to suddenly disappear. Should I be desperately hopeful and/or optimistic about the new year or will 2010 be another tough year for everyone?

Living in New York, an over-saturated media market, exposes you to all of the recurrences of failures among our government, our financial industry, and especially our sports icons and movie stars. In 2009, where the New York media captured all of these shortcomings, I kept wondering when we could finally celebrate some “good news.” Just a few of the media headlines in 2009 involved the proposed government-run health care system, the war on terror, and the escapades of American golf superstar, Tiger Woods. In all of these newsworthy topics, it seemed like there was only negative implications and no silver lining.

If even a supposed flawless superstar like Woods can have a bad year in 2009, then can’t we put it all behind us and look forward to better days ahead in 2010? My prediction is that things will get better, companies will stop cutting jobs and think about adding new positions, and the economy will continue to improve. However, just like the continued fallout for Woods will continue to plague him, the success of each and every one of us may take a few months to jump start after a prolonged winter hangover from 2009 is finally behind us.

What if *you* were asked to give your house up to Michael Jackson for a couple weeks during the time in his life when he was disliked the most? Would you have done it? Most of his fans would have in a heart-beat, I’m sure. But what about those who were on the fence about him?

At a difficult time in his life, the King of Pop was looking for a safe haven—and wound up at our house.

This is the story of how Michael Jackson—the King of Pop and at the time one of the world’s most wanted men—hid out at my family’s house.

Among his staff, Jackson was referred to as the Principal. In our family, he was known as the Secret—one we kept for nine days five years ago. We believed then, and do now, that not revealing Jackson’s whereabouts was the right thing to do. Now that he’s gone, I can tell why and how we did it.

It was March 2004. The previous year, Jackson had appeared on TV explaining why he believed it to be normal for adults to share their beds with children, that it was the most loving thing you could do. What he saw as innocent a Los Angeles district attorney saw as criminal. Rumors were swirling that Jackson would be indicted on charges of child molestation by an LA grand jury. The King of Pop became a subject of ridicule. Gone was the cute boy who had swooned his way into the hearts of generations. He was replaced by a man-child, a suspected pedophile.

In April 2004, Jackson was to receive an award from the African Ambassadors’ Spouses Association for his humanitarian work. But few of the journalists seeking credentials for the event cared about his work in Africa—they wanted to ask him about what had happened at Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. So a routine trip to Washington became anything but routine. Jackson needed a place to stay, and those closest to him were finding that there was no acceptable room in a Washington hotel.

The real-estate agent assigned to locate lodgings for him was running out of options. Stopping for a bite to eat, she saw the April 2004 Washingtonian. It featured a “Great Places to Live” article with me, my wife, and our two children on the cover. The story talked about how we had designed a house near Leesburg with no walls and plenty of open space. The agent knew us well enough to pick up the phone and ask whether we’d consider allowing Michael Jackson and his children to stay in our home.

What would you have done if a friend had called out of the blue and suggested that Michael Jackson might be interested in staying at your home? We first assumed she was joking. But she was serious.

On the previous Sunday, the sermon delivered by our minister, Reverend Dr. Norman A. Tate, had been about the Good Samaritan. Reverend Tate was the first person we consulted. Should we offer Michael Jackson safe haven? That night, following a lengthy family discussion and vote, we ironed out the details and began preparing for the Jackson family’s arrival.

Michael Jackson traveled with an entourage of 14. There were two cooks, three nannies, three children, personal assistants, tutors, security men, and Jackson himself. He moves in, you move out. (We stayed at a hotel.) Those who surrounded him called him the Client or the Principal. Rarely was he referred to by name. There were stretch Hummers and Suburbans that suggested a visit by a head of state—which is what our neighbors suspected.

Before he moved in, the house had to be prepared. His entourage covered all glass windows and doors. He was to have white bed linens and towels only. His favorite scent, a mountain fragrance, was sprayed everywhere and lingered for weeks after his departure.

Then, under the cover of darkness, he arrived. His private jet flew in and out of the Leesburg airport.

That evening as he moved in, we dined at a local restaurant, courtesy of the entertainer, and wondered whether he was enjoying our house as much as we did. We wondered whether he admired the views of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the deck and whether he took a stroll and noted the seven species of birds that call our acres home. Did he play the baby grand piano? Did his children frolic in the small dance studio? Would he enjoy the pool and hot tub and five acres, or would he just hole up and hide?

The next morning brought invitations for us to attend several events, including a BET reception and the African ambassadors’ reception.

Before Jackson’s arrival at the BET affair, a who’s who of Washington’s African-Amercan elite waited patiently. There were plenty of nasty remarks; some couples talked about how they wouldn’t let their children anywhere near Jackson. Then he arrived and the stampede began. Those who had ridiculed him the most were first in line.

His assistant ushered us to the front of the receiving line. We were told Jackson wanted to meet us first to thank us for allowing him and his children to use our home. He talked about the family pictures on the walls and how comfortable the place felt.

It was all very pleasant, but you could tell there was something unsettled about him. You could tell what he coveted most: He’d grown up without a childhood, and our house is filled with the kind of childhood memories money can’t buy—baptisms, first-birthday parties, family adventures.

To keep his stay at our house secret, we arrived there in the morning in time for the school bus to pick up one of our two daughters. We were always met by one of Jackson’s bodyguards dressed in all black. I finally told him that if he wanted Jackson’s presence to remain secret, he shouldn’t meet us every morning looking like Mr. T.

Reporters were in high gear searching for Jackson. We feared a media circus in our neighborhood. Our daughters, then 13 and 15, went to school each day wondering if their world would unravel.

On day eight, we were surprised Jackson wasn’t ready to leave, as the agreement had called for. That night, he arranged for a private wine-and-cheese reception at our own house so our children could meet his. He was more than gracious. While I worked, my wife and daughters were greeted by Jackson and his three kids. They spoke of childhood and normality. His children were very talkative; he was soft-spoken but playful. My wife described him as a gentle soul who obviously loved his children and they him. He also was willing to discipline his kids. He posed for pictures and agreed to autograph many things, including CDs.

By day nine, Jackson and his children were gone.

The empty wine bottles hidden around the house hinted at a man we now know was deeply tormented. There were other signs, but my wife and I have agreed they will remain secret. We knew from his representatives that Jackson tended to live nocturnally, sleeping during the day and roaming the house at night.

A visit by guests to our house now always leads to a conversation about Jackson’s visit. His picture, taken when he was standing by our baby grand piano, sits atop a table in the living room. Almost everyone sees it and wonders what it was like to talk to him and have him live in our home.

I’m always asked why I’ve never talked about Michael Jackson’s stay at our house. I say I met Jackson three times in my life—twice face to face.

Most African-Americans of my generation were introduced to a young Michael Jackson through the radio or by a friend who had one of his records. For me it was a 45-RPM played at Sonny Mason’s barbershop in my hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia.

The second encounter was in 1984 when Jackson and his brothers kicked off their Victory Tour in Kansas City. I stood out among the other reporters covering it because I didn’t appear to care about Michael Jackson the celebrity as much as I did the revenue the tour represented in the cities it visited. That night, I received two tickets to attend the concert and a private reception at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. In a receiving line for the Jacksons following the concert, I met Michael in person for the first time.

The third time was the Washington visit.

I, too, wonder why I’ve never talked before about his stay in our home. Was it because Jackson and I were the same age or the fact that, like so many African-Americans, I liked to remember the little kid from Gary, Indiana, more than I did the man with another reputation?

Perhaps, as Reverend Tate suggested, it was just the right thing to do.

As word of Michael Jackson’s death on June 25 spread, my family mourned the man we’d met not as the King of Pop but as a person trapped inside a world that was and was not of his own creation, a man who came to us through his representatives in need of a place to stay. As I sat on our deck and looked west toward the Blue Ridge Mountains, I hoped he now was seeing what I see each and every night—a perfect sunset.

The theme park announced plans to bring back the 3-D sci-fi film starring Michael Jackson next February, over 23 years after the attraction debuted in Anaheim, Calif. The 17-minute film starred the late King of Pop as a singing-and-dancing intergalactic commander. It was directed by Francis Ford Coppola and executive produced by George Lucas.

In the film, Jackson leads a goofy alien and robot crew as they battle a wicked queen played by Anjelica Huston. “Captain EO” originally opened in Disneyland’s Tommorrowland in 1986 and ran for more than a decade. Identical versions later opened at other Disney theme parks. They were all closed by 1998.

Review Of 2009

Here we are then. Another year over and 2010 is edging closer like that paedophile in my garden. 2009 has bought us some fantastic new celebrities, but also some rather odd storylines!

January & February

Jennifer Aniston & John Mayer broke up. Obviously not the end of the world because he looks like a tin of tuna and to be perfectly honest he probably smells like it to.
Those two from Mamma Mia hooked up, you know the one from Mean Girls and the annoying British one. As much as I liked Mamma Mia, the British one really did ruin it. All he did was run around in flippers. Good work Cooper!
Jessica Simpson got fat.
NASA saw her from space.
Robert Webb did that disturbing spandex dance from Flashdance. I was sick everywhere.
But the biggest story of these months has to be Rihanna and Chris Brown. The whole head to the dashboard treatment. I can see it now, pictures of Rihanna naked fly onto the windscreen, they swerve, Chris gets angry and BAM! head right into the dashboard. That car is now being auctioned off described as “With an authentic Rihanna face mask.” Well someone has to make some money out of it!

The star of these two months has got to be Alexandra Burke! She won the X Factor and this year just set the ball rolling! She was an amazing singer on the X Factor, then Beyonce came on and she practically shat herself, but these things happen. She has taken winning in her stride and not let her go to her head! Bravo Alex! Look forward to album no. 2!

March & April

Kerry Krakona and Mark Croft were off after she announced he had taken all her money and she was divorcing him. This lasted all of two days, as they reunited for a chinese take away and an Iceland shopping trip
Paris Hilton landed herself a loaded star! Doug Reinhardt has a lot of money apparently! They also say ‘like’ a lot I would imagine!
Jade Goody lost her cancer battle. As the jokes came flooding in, I felt genuinely sorry for Jade, the boys, her mum and oh her granddad. If you watched her programme you would understand just how adorable he is. He can’t remember much and just babbles. I think there is only one quote, well maybe two, that can sum up Jade. Stephen Fry called her “the Princess Diana from the wrong side of the tracks”, and they fact that she asked where “East Angular” was. As much as I loved Jade, she did ruin the Kebab.
This was when Katie went out partying until 6AM on Mother’s day. So. Good for her. Like her kids actually care.
Horse face and ‘I act like this to make my penis seem bigger’ from The Apprentice started doing it. Yep Kate Walsh & Phil Taylor were banging away. Noiceee.

The star of March & April goes to the lovely Su Bo. That amazing singing voice and that gut wrenching accent. The moustache just makes me want to lap her up. If anyone speaks to her before I do, tell her I want my curtains back, and I do NOT appreciate them being made into a dress.

May & June

The two from Slumdog Millionaire got it on.
Kerry Krakona got fat and I mean like beer belly fat. Bless her. Too many chicken platters from Iceland I think!
David Beckham did that massive Emporio Armani underwear add. Thanks for sharing Becks!
Michael Jackson died. I did not like Michael Jackson. He had done nothing against me, but he just annoyed me. And then when he died, everyone suddenly liked him. GET OUT. The memorial service was nice though. I watch most of it, but that was the day we had a lot of rain and there was very loud thunder so he kind of get ignored while I looked out my bedroom window.
But obviously story of the months was Katie and Peter breaking up. I got like 70 texts telling me. As if I didn’t already know. Seriously guys! I practically shit out what is written in heat! and on heatworld, so why you thought I wouldn’t already know is beyond me.

Star of the months has got to be Amanda Holden! She blossomed throughout this years series of Britain’s Got Talent and started to become loved by the British public. She did the shoot for heat! when she talked about her botox, surgery and took photos without her make-up. Now that is what I call a star. Love you Manda

July & August

Steve Jones & Hayden Panettiere got it on. Imagine their babies
Fern left This Morning. She was fit. That was a joke. 100% joke! It was very sad, and they were all drunk by about 10:37. Good on you fatty!
R-Pattz bangs Kristen up against a wall. That didn’t actually happen, but they did do it. I bet Lautner joined in aswell.
Krakona’s nose caved in. All that sniffing of Iceland food. Crack ridden I swear.
Pictures of the Price and Alex Reid walking around naked, taking pictures on the balcony and doing it in every possible place. Get yours
Oh and Kate Moss started to look, unfortunately, like Gillian Taylforth. Oh dear.

Star of July & August has got to go to Pixie Lott! That amazing album and singing voice, but OH MY her dress sense! She practically shits on the fashionistas of this world!

September & October

Robbie returns. Don’t really like him, but good for him.
Cheryl Cole did that X Factor performance. There was that whole hoo ha as to whether she was going to sing live or not and that it was hypocritical if she didn’t. Who cares. She is sooo adorable. I want her to be my best friend The performance was average, but she got that number one. Only one low point. WTF is with those trousers??? TKMaxx? Probs.
Arlene got fired and Alesha ’amazing’ Dixon got her place on the Strictly judging panel. She got a lot of stick, but she hit back and has for defs come out on top!
Leona ‘unhappy’ Lewis got attacked. As lovely as she is, she does sing some depressing songs. I like them, but give us some hope that you have had something good happen to you! She still didn’t deserve that though!
Steven Gately and Patrick Swayze snuffed it. Sad times.
Ahhh, Katy Perry and Russell Brand have regular Nookie
BIGGEST story was that slag Taylor Swift got humiliated by Kanye West at the VMAs. To be honest, Beyonce probably did deserve the award, but there was no need for that Kanye. The worst but is that Taylor thinks she is amazing now. You aren’t. You are boring.

Dannii Minogue scoops up star of the months with that amazing X Factor year. She has definitely had the most radical makeover of the year and she owned this year’s series of X Factor!

November & December

Katie hits the jungle and, I think showed that she is actually a normal person, and doesn’t have a frozen heart. She is like a Strepsil, hard on the outside, but quite soft and gooey on the inside. I would blame the curry. She left after she was voted to do like 7000 trials and when she left, she dumped Alex Reid! Boy did I lol! She shouldn’t have said ‘closure’ as much though.
Kate Moss made that fantastic statement; “Nothing tastes better than skinny feels!” HAHA. This was quote of the year!
Joe won the X Factor. Well done, but did you see Stacey. No one knows what she said but she was adorable wasn’t she
Christine Bleakley & Frank Lampard got together. That is cute.
Ricky Whittle and Carley Stenson ended it. His big penis was hurting her.

Stars of November & December has got to be the cast of Eastenders! Fantastic storylines and acting all lead up to that Christmas Day climax. Well done. My Nan called Peggy Mitchell the ‘Poison Dwarf’. Made the episode to be honest. Well done Eastenders!

2009: A YEAR IN REVIEW….

In 2009 I had been thru a few highs yet many lows.

In 2009 I had laughed plenty yet shed so many tears.

In 2009 I had gained a few new friends yet lost so many loved ones.

In 2009 I had seen a few triumphs yet witnessed many more tragedies.

In 2009 I had witnessed a few smiles yet saw a lot more sorrow and sadness.

In 2009 I had celebrated my most loved one turn 60.

In 2009 I had seen the fall of one of the greatest sports stars of my era.

In 2009 I had witnessed my home country be devastated by a natural disaster.

In 2009 the world lost the GREATEST entertainer of All-Time.

In 2009 the world witnessed a part of ‘HISTORY’.

Call it a superstition however I’m not a fan of uneven numbers and had a minor feeling that 2009 was not going to be as great as 2008 was. It’s always hard to back up a year that included travelling to Vietnam, Philippines and Thailand with my closest mates then to Fiji and Samoa with my family. Travelling always gives that year a few extra brownie points. So to 2009 I begin….

On a personal level, 2009 brought one of the highlights of my young life and that was to celebrate with close family and friends the 60th birthday of my Mum. To have family fly over from overseas for this occasion, to have family who I personally have not seen in years turn out in numbers for this celebration is a memory that will last a long time. To see the one I love most smiling from ear to ear and enjoy her time with loved ones is priceless. On another point to give a company 10 years of service is something no one sets out to achieve however it is quite rewarding that your time, effort and dedication gets acknowledged and am thankful that have been able to work with some great, fun yet knowledgeable people over the years.

2009 has been one of the hardest especially with the loss of so many loved ones over the 12 months. The sorrow, tears, sadness let alone emptiness your family, friends, loved ones including I feel are ones that will not go away anytime soon though we all know you are in a better place with our Father in Heaven. I am glad to say that all of you hold a special part in me and that I will never forget you. I dedicate this entry to all of you who have passed on. I love you and miss you and I know you are all looking down smiling down on all your loved ones.

On a global level, well we all witnessed HISTORY with Barack Obama becoming the President of USA, watched one natural disaster after another hit various regions of the globe with notable mentions of course to my home country Samoa, Indonesia and South East Asia to name a few with many perished. A host of celebrities passing on including Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze, DJ AM to name a few plus many more. Various news headlines from a plane landing in the Hudson River of New York, to devastating bush fires in Victoria to what is now known as ‘Black Saturday’ to more importantly, the Global Financial Crisis. From Roger Federer becoming the greatest grand slam winner of tennis, to the demise of the greatest golfer of our time, Tiger Woods to both my Denver Nuggets and Parramatta Eels falling at the final hurdle of their respective seasons.

As I wrap up this review, 2009 in my opinion has been more of the lows then of the highs. Though I can not entirely control what will happen in 2010, there are certain parts of it I am already looking forward too and that I do have control of, and I for one will definitely be out there to make 2010, one of the best years yet. So therefore, to 2009, kiss my ass and good riddance as you have FAILED!!

its the talk of the country right after christmas. new year’s, and, more importantly, new year’s eve. WHERE are you going, WHO’S hosting, and just HOW drunk will you get? the rich and envied make their invitation lists, the hopeful B-listers are competing to be the biggest kiss-up just to be ON said list, and the country folk reside to be with their families (since they have little chance of being anywhere else). it seems everyone has their place–or do they? aren’t we forgetting someone? yes that’s right–the boring, average people reading this blog. well, last new year’s i DID go to a party,but it was a close family friend’s and the strongest thing there was apple cider. not that i’m complaining.

but 2009 deserves some type of slack. so many things happened! first and foremost, my hero died. he was a man whose voice was heard not just all over the nation, but all over the world. from the first time i saw him on television, i was mesmerized by his pure talent and charm. when i heard of his death, i was struck with shock, like all true fans. the headlines still flash in my mind to this day. must i even say his name?

I am a very independent person. I have been doing my own thing and getting my own way for as long as I can remember. I have been picking out my own outfits since before kindergarten and making my own lunch since the 3rd grade. My parents raised me to be a free thinking, self sufficient individual and I am. Currently, this is manifesting itself in my life as frustration.

I am frustrated because I am at home and when I am at home I don’t have any personal space. Literally, I don’t have any personal space. I don’t have a bedroom. My mom moved while I was away at school this year. I couldn’t come home to see the new house or help pack up the old house because of my crew schedule with the show. Because of this, I didn’t see the house until my mom had moved in and I came home for Christmas. It’s a really cool house and the location is great. I can walk to all the bars downtown which is fabulous. But after being here for almost two weeks, I have come to a conclusion. Not having any space that is mine makes me crazy. I feel like I can’t escape to any place where no one can bug me.

Recently, all I’ve wanted to do is be alone with my thoughts and it pisses me off to no end that I can’t. Maybe I’m just being overly dramatic. I can’t tell. I don’t live at home for 3/4 of the year so having to be back under my mother’s watch is also annoying despite her being really chill about what I do.

All I want is a little bit of privacy. Also, if anyone is confused about the title of this post look below. All will be revealed.

Over the last weeks, I have been brainstorming, about a blog I would write for year in sports and entertainment – the highs, lows and the most memorable. I thought about the death of legends, the making of legends and legendary performances. I thought to myself, how I would write a blog post capturing all that happened, and then it came to mind that I should just let the thoughts flow from my fingers tips. You know me, I tend to shoot from them Caribbean hips, so with a little flavor and lots of drum and bass, here we go 2009.

We all rang in the new year with a new vision, as individuals and then as citizens of the free world, who elected our first African-American president – Barack Obama. It was a heavily contested democratic race, having almost elected the Senator from New York and Former First Lady Hilary Clinton. The female sorority of traveling pantsuits rallied behind Senator Clinton, but she finally succumbed to the change candidate Obama. But the rookie Senator from Chicago, Illinois routed senor Senator John McCain to win the presidency. There was the rise and fall of the icon of Sarah Palin and a fashion scandal too.

So after Mr. Obama became President Obama in the historic inauguration, The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Arizona Cardinals in the Superbowl with a clutch grab from wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Although, Larry Fitzgerald was my choice for MVP, Holmes was truly deserving of it. One low-light of that game was when Defensive End James Harrison punched Aaron Francisco, in what will forever be one of the dirtiest play, I have ever seen. Harrison made the news a few months later, saying he would not visit the White House with his team as was tradition with the winning Superbowl team – Bonehead Award nominee.

The death of Michael Jackson stunned the nation, and fans from near and far came out to pay tribute to the king of pop. It was later determined that Jackson died of a drug overdose – a combination of prescription drugs, dispensed by his so-called doctor. But as big as Michael’s death was, there were other shocking moments. The sudden death of Titans’/Ravens’ retired quarterback Steve McNair as a result of a murder suicide. As rumors swirl around the cause of his death, it was later discovered that his untimely death was as a result of an extramarital affair.

The Minnesota Vikings held the sports world and the media under, as they attempted to stay in the spotlight after a sub par 2008 season, by courting Brett Favre to come out of retirement. SportsCenter and every media outlet spent days and night covering Brett in his backyard mowing the lawn, playing pickup football with high school players in Mississippi, until they missed the secret private jet that took him to the Vikings headquarters. The Favre saga was out of control and I even stepped in to offer my two cents. Favre’s on again off again romance with the Vikings ended in a date to the prom after training camp, which was my bet – he is too old to be hit in two-a-days.

The Denver Broncos had their fair share of quarterback saga as Jay Cutler and his new coach had a falling out, after trade rumors surfaced, with talks of Matt Cassel coming to town. Stud wide receiver Brandon Marshall turned up his divatude refusing to show up to camp and demanded a trade in a contract dispute.

Bengals’ Chad Johnson deed-polled his name to Chad OchoCinco – need I say more? Terrell Owen was released by Dallas, did a TV Reality Show with his publicists, who were more like galpals – not one press release was written and one galpal booked a room for two with T.O. Then Mr. Owens went to Buffalo, his press conference was like an announcement for presidential candidacy.

The benching of Vince Young and then the return of Mr. Young who took his team on a playoff hunt. Young shared the spotlight with my candidate for MVP/Rookie of the year running back Chris Johnson. Coach Mangini struggles in Cleveland, Coach Caldwell chasing the Dolphins 17-0 record – with my favorite horse Peyton.

Kobe and Lebron ads hinted of a NBA Finals matchup, but the Magic routed Lebron and the Cavaliers – breaking my heart as a Cavaliers’ fan. My fondest memory from the Magic-Cavs series was that 3-pointer by Lebron with seconds to go in the Orlando series. Lowlight was that unsportsmanlike infraction committed by Lebron at the end of the series – the “no hand shake”, come on Lebron. Steven Jackson was traded after that Don Nelson tirade. Ron Artest to Lakers and Vince to the Magic.

There was Chris and Rihanna, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and that annoying Kanye West moment. JayZ had that stupid D.O.A song, Usher got a divorce and wrote a song called “Papers”. Maxwell new album was a hit, Y.E. Yang beat Tiger Woods, talking about Tiger Woods – oh boy! As to Mr. Woods, he had a fall from grace after that Thanksgiving accident-incident turned extramarital affair turned media standoff, turn public relations nightmare turned transgressions. Oh well, I am just saying – agent/publicist for hire here – resume updated.

Delonte West and Gilbert Arenas had weapons issues, T.I. went to jail on weapons charges and his girlfriend had a reality show. Rodney Harrison retired, Junior Seau wanted to come back, Derrick Brooks had tryouts, Mr. Haynesworth went to Washington, Shaq to Cleveland and Dwayne Wade refused to resign – oh boy. Twitter became a bigger hit with athletes, artists and actors. Chad OchoCinco coined the phrase “child please” and Deion Saunders shouts “pay the man” when Joshua Cribbs runs one back. Chalmers of the Heat, started all 82 games off the bench, while Michael Beasley puts himself on blast on twitter result ing in a 30 day stay in rehab – too much disclosure there.

Hollywood lost Farah Fawcett and Britney Murphy,the Twilight Saga New Moon, Avatar and Transformers were all box office hits. Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry gone too soon and Brett Favre needs to know its too soon to show up his coach in national TV. Jamarcus Russell still overrated, Dolphins still struggles on December.

How I could I forget the Mike Vick story and the fact that he ended up on my favorite team the Eagles. The unselfishness of Donavan McNabb, the leadership of Andy Reid, the over-bearing Jerry Jones. The Tony Romo’s excuses, the heart of Darren Sproles.

Michael Jordan to the Hall Of Fame and Charles Barkley to golf rehab for that god-awful swing. So as I sip the last bit of eggnog and brings this blog to a close. Here are my final shouts outs: Peyton Manning, Charles Woodson, Lebron James, Chad OchoCinco, Akron Ohio High School wrestler amputee Leroy Sutton and his best friend Dartanyon Crockett – for their display of courage and friendship. John Daly for his courageous attempt coming back to the PGA Tour, Stewart Cink for his British Open win, Ray Allen and his son, Shaq for his kind gesture helping that North Carolina family, Senator Ted Kennedy for his contribution to mankind and politics. The Female US Golf team for winning the Solheim Cup and the boys for the Ryder Cup. Get a grip to Tiger Woods, James Harrison, Gilbert Arenas, Tom Brady (for snobbing Susie Kolber), Flozell Adams, Adalius Thomas, Brett Favre, JayZ, Kanye West, Sarah Palin (you are not a rogue), Charlie Weiss, Roger Goodell of the No Fun League. Tom Cable gets a thumbs down and shame on you Brett Favre for refusing to sit down, causing shame to your coach and yes Tiger Woods earns my god-awful swing for being a swinger… I am out.

Does exception talent override personal responsibility and moral principals?

The two biggest celebrity stories of 2009 were the apparent death-by-misadventure of Michael Jackson and the “careerocide” of Tiger Woods. Neither ended up as they did on their own. Michael Jackson did not trawl the streets for a doctor who would do his bidding and step outside professional boundaries for a price. Someone else would have found Dr. Conrad Murray . Tiger Woods could not have maintained his sordid harem without someone in charge of his schedule or his finances knowing. What price does someone put on turning their back on their benefactor and allowing them to do what is “not right” generally or specifically?

Is it enough for someone to just be “good” at something – performing or playing golf – for them to be allowed to use their money, power and influence to break the rules? Michael Jackson and Tiger Wood have paid a price they didn’t foresee, but how many others are out there – entertainers, sportsmen, politicians – whose activities are shielded by walls of deceit? And should those walls suddenly, unexpectedly come down, what of the people who’ve stood by and done nothing to prevent potential tragedy?

2009 reinvented the music star with people like Lady GaGa (a reinvention of Madonna’s eclectic ’style’) and the newly invograted Jay-Z, and even the stupor of Kanye West had… “Yo, Daily Dues, I’ma let you finish your 2009 Awards, but TIME has one of the best yearly awards of all time,” it’s own moment. So, who are the big winners in the music game?

2009 Award for Music Legend: Michael Jackson. As much as he should deserve 2009’s best Artist, he had NO releases this year. However, the King of Pop did massively influence the community by extending his legendary reign for three months on Twitter. His death, and subsequent movie and single release, have earned him this years legend award. Rest in Peace Michael, your reign as the King of Pop will never be forgotten.

2009 Award for Best Artist: Black Eyed Peas. A return to the spotlight after a break from Monkey Business, their newest album THE E.N.D. may not have been what fans wanted, the new style of the Black Eyed Peas attracted new fans who have gained a love for will.i.am and his solo work. Though their new style is different, they have captured the culture with “I’ve Gotta Feeling,” and “Boom Boom Pow”

2009 Award for Best Album: The Fame/Fame Monster (Lady GaGa). It only took her one full year from the release of The Fame to get truly famous. Thanks to the work of Colby O’Donis (in “Just Dance”) and Konvict, GaGa was able to make the jump from very popular techn0-pop into a rising star in mainstream hip-hop/techno. With greater exposure in the area of hip-hop, people began to look at her other work outside of her big hit “Just Dance” to “Poker Face” to “Paparazzi.” Naturally, her rerelease of The Fame into Fame Monster, the song “Bad Romance” has become her new big hit. Keep up the work Lady GaGa!

2009 Award for Best Rapper: He lives in an Empire State of Mind, Jay-Z. His newest rap anthem, “Empire State of Mind,” made his third chapter of The Blueprint stronger and much more developed than previous. With great work and other pre-released singles like “DOA: Death of Auto-Tune,” Jay-Z ridded the hood as a subject and put a focus on the industry itself. In New York, Jay-Z takes a 2009 Award.

2009 Award for Best Rocker/Rock Group: Kings of Leon. Much like Lady GaGa, it took Kings of Leon a good year to solidify their album Only By the Night as a solid alternative album, their style is unlike many, and much like GaGa, their singles are still being made “hidden gems” in the community.

2009 Award for Most Jackassery: Kanye West. There is no real explanation needed. Just YouTube “Kanye West VMA.”

Michael Jackson’s FBI file to be released

The Federal Bureau of Investigation will release 333 pages of Michael Jackson’s formerly-classified file on Monday morning. Can we interest you in a little light reading?

The documents will relate to his 1993 and 2004 child molestation cases — as well as any case Michael Jackson was the victim of … including threats and extortion attempts. Nothing about Dr. Conrad Murray or Michael’s death will be in the files.

Our guess — the extortion attempts will be the most interesting.

The FBI did a similar thing back in October concerning files involving Anna Nicole Smith and a possible plot to kill the son of her 89-year-old husband, J. Howard Marshall II.

Exactly 2 Weeks To Go!

I’m approaching 300 pages in my manuscript…I’ve hired a new professional editor who means business, and all is coming along nicely! I already have to pinch myself, I must admit.

I know it’s all going to FLY by, so I’m savoring the lead-up to NYE 2010 for sure. My family is well, my Grandmother is still enjoying life at 93 (soon to be 94) , and things couldn’t be better (well, they could always be better, but they’re damn good as it is, and I’m squeezing all the juice out of life, so I’m very content right now).

2010 is ours, and we can make our lives even more joyous and appreciative through following our hearts, making some big decisions (some might be scary, but they’ll change your life for the better in the long run), and giving back to our communities however possible.

Aah…Counting down to 2010 in Montreal will be so emotional this time around…I feel like I’m really living my life to the fullest, and going for it, having the guts to tell my story (which is often dark and gritty, as well as brutally honest), and making no excuses for who I am, or where I’m headed.

In the end, I want to know that I left every ounce of who I am “out there”, and didn’t hold back in life. There’s no point in dying with any music still left within, if you get my point.

Making peace with my past, moving forward, and loving the gift of life through thick and thin. 2010 is a huge year for me! Choose to make it YOURS as well. All it takes is a decision to grow even further, then the courage to back it up one day at a time, period.

Nothing is easy that’s worth while, and that’s the way it should be.

We may have lost the King of Pop, but there is still much money and entertainment to be had from the brand that is Michael Jackson.

This week, BBC3 is running a reality show/talent quest thing called Move Like Michael Jackson. And, do you know what? It’s actually quite good. Last night was the open auditions round, which took place in shopping centres around Britain. There were the inevitable Jacko impersonators with the rhinestone gloves and acres of visible white sock (one of whom only started to dance well after his wig had fallen off), a few attention-seekers who wanted their few minutes of strutting on a stage – and some incredibly talented individual and group dancers. As my other half remarked, “Diversity don’t look so clever now, do they?”

The idea isn’t to dance like Michael, it’s to dance with the “spirit” of Michael – not in a Derek Acorah way, but to feel inspired by the music and interpret it in a way the King of Pop would approve of. How do we know what the K of P would have enjoyed? Well, the two judges were Lavelle Smith Jr, who worked extensively with Michael as a choreographer, and Mark Summers, who was the man in charge of casting dancers for Jackson’s This Is It tour, so presumably they should know. And in the next round, Michael’s brother Jermaine will be there to cast a brotherly eye over the auditionees.

The format borrows most of its elements from The X Factor and so on, with linking pieces by DJ Reggie Yates. There are a few “human interest” stories from the contestants, but this isn’t laid on too thick. Mostly the dancing does the talking, and it’s astonishingly good – creative, clever, funny, brave.

The next stage is on BBC3 tonight, and it all culminates in a live final on Sunday, with the winner gaining a place in next year’s Michael Jackson tribute concert.

A Night to Remember

Warning: This will be another love-batch post.

“Seniors, you did it again!”, those were the words of the host as he announced our batch representatives King and Queen of Pop during Orcom Night with the theme of “Beat it”, last December 10 at Crobar Malate

The venue was filled with endless cheers, as this was another sweet victory to claim for our batch. I must give it to the other candidates as well, they really gave their best that night with the way they ramped on the stage, answered the judge’s questions and rock the place with their Michael Jackson moves. Everyone, from the candidates to the other students as well, were all very glittery that night, sporting an MJ-inspired look.

Aside from the title, King and Queen of Pop or this year’s Mr and Ms Orcom, our batch representatives, Jemi and Wynne, also won the following:

Mr Photogenic Award (for Jemi)
Best in Glam Rock Outfit (for Wynne)
Heiress of Moonwalk (for Wynne)

To OrcomSoc, to the Seniors, to Wynne and Jemi, and to everyone who supported this event, congratulations! It was, indeed, a night to remember!

Were it not for the unexpected death of Michael Jackson this summer, it would be easy to view A&E’s “The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty” as a strange extension of the “Real Housewives” franchise: “Real Ex-Pop Stars of Los Angeles.”

Certainly, the first two episodes, which air Sunday night, follow a familiar format, in which we meet the principals — Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Tito — and their big houses and fancy cars, and we watch as they eat in various locales. The brothers quickly assume their roles: Marlon is the funny one; Tito, the peacemaker; Jackie, the father figure; Jermaine, who left the group when the group left Motown, the troublemaker.

“The Jacksons” does have the benefit of bygone celebrity, which the producers milk with many old photos and clips, and an actual narrative: The brothers are coming together not only for this reality show, but also to produce an album that will, they hope, rekindle the Jackson sound.

If Michael were still alive, the show would no doubt be fueled with the tantalizing possibility of an appearance by him, which, of course, would have never happened. But he died shortly after filming began, and “The Jacksons” became something else entirely: another grim example of the siren call of reality television. continue reading…

We began our last show with a discussion of potential impending Apocalypse–evidently on the mind of one of our audience members due to the current ironically zeitgeist-y fixation on the year 2012 as the Deadline For All Things.

Naturally this transitioned, ere long, to an extended discussion of popular culture. (For my own part, this usually works in reverse; I find I can’t absorb much mainstream pop culture (of, say, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians variety) before my thoughts inevitably drift to the destruction of the human race by our own witless hands. But I digress.) Our dive into pop culture led us in several rich directions, a couple of which have stayed on Kobi’s and my minds in the days since the show ended; we’ll be following up on a couple of those threads here.

The first of same:

WHO IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON IN THE WORLD?

As one might imagine, the segue into this topic came from when Tiger Woods arose in The Conversation–as was, I suppose inevitable, his marital infidelity being both the scandal du jour and possibly one of the more lasting stories of the decade. I will set my personal fascination with our collective fascination with Tiger Woods aside for the moment–perhaps I’ll use an alternate post to explore why it is that we admire athletes and politicians on equal footing and now, it seems, demand model behavior from both groups–and focus on the question of who is the most famous person in the world, which we bandied about as a group on Tuesday.

Our early suggestions included most of the names that keep cropping up on various internet lists, from the quasi-official to the half-assedly bloviational. We mentioned: Barack Obama, George Bush, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Kim Kardashian, Madonna, Oprah, Osama Bin Laden, David and Victoria Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo (he’s also soccer player, kids), Nelson Mandela, the Pope, and Harry Reid, among others. (The last of these suggestions was made by a girl who was, I believe, being faceitious, though with certain people it can be difficult to be certain and devastating to assume.)

A few observations here:

We had some difficulty deciding what “famous” actually meant. Does it mean that an individual plucked randomly from the faceless hordes of humanity would recognize the name? The face? The accomplishments? Would be influenced by the person? Excluding President Obama, Pope Benedict and Kim Kardashian, each of those criteria probably leads to a different answer.
When we say “famous” are we, by implication, excluding the deceased? For some reason, it strikes me that we are–that saying that Jesus or Hitler or Mao or Gandhi or Einstein is the most famous person in the world kind of misses the point. (Sorry, John Lennon.) and that post-death recognizability is something other than fame. But what the fuck is it? We don’t have a very good word. Immortality? Not exactly. It’s more like legacyhavingness, that rarest of dreams that drives Kim Kardashian and all the rest of us egotists.
When we say “famous” are we, by implication, excluding the infamous? I suppose infamy is best seen, in this context, as just one form of fame. But it seems odd to measure Osama Bin Laden on the same fame scale as, say, Posh Spice, and that he’d be better categorized with other people who are well-known for doing explicitly horrible things. Like, say, making a sex tape with Ray-J.
When we say “famous” are we, by implication, excluding the fictional? It was pointed out that more people the world over recognize certain fictitious personages–Ronald McDonald and Mickey Mouse were mentioned, though I’d throw Santa Claus, Mario, and Kim Kardashian in there as well–than possibly any of the real people above. This is, of course, horrifying. It’s also confusing in conjunction with the “alive or dead” debate, since how, then, does one decide when a fictional character is no longer comparable to others. Mario is to Barack Obama, one might posit, as Sherlock Holmes is to Charles Darwin, at least inasmuch as the former two are currently active and the latter two stopped releasing albums a while back. Except that now there’s a new Sherlock Holmes movie coming out, which means that now Sherlock Holmes will be back in the public consciousness (two points to Warner Bros. for casting ex-addict Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Literature’s Favorite Coke-Fiend). And–and this is the point where I had to stop thinking about this–if we separate the fictional from the non-, is it possible that Jesus Christ wins in both categories, like the year Dennis Eckersley won both the AL Cy Young and the MVP awards?

As you can probably imagine, gentle reader, my head is about to explode with confusion and gratification; if we were keeping rankings on a gridded scorecard, mine would have five colors of pen, lines connecting various circled entries, and notes scribbled in the margins, and it would require a z-axis to try to put thinks in order.

Which is why I love doing this show.

Been working a lot the past few days. Had physical therapy and doctor’s appointments. Just extra busy in general. Sleep has been on a pretty good schedule. Out at an appropriate time and up around 7. Just haven’t been able to make it to the gym. Maybe I’ll do that tonight while Moose is at Karate. Doctor doubled my depression medicine. Been 2 days and I already see a slight difference. I’m more calm. My mother called my wife yesterday and I didn’t flip out. I was just annoyed. Like why bother after all these years huh? I called her back at work and she told me she had “dialed the wrong number”. Like I believe that one. Otherwise all is well in the life of karate mom. Just yawning a lot from the medicine but as long as it’s helping I don’t mind. I even think I’ll end with a joke for the day I want to remember.

Last night in the car on the way home we asked Moose what star was at the center of our solar system. Mind you, Moose is 7 years old. His response was……Michael Jackson. We had to explain the correct answer is the sun and not a man with a white glove.

One Month of Training

I spent about one month learning the dance routine for “Rainism” [a song by Korean pop artiste Rain (the Ninja Assassin guy!)] — always liked watching people dance. Decided to give it a shot since life is short.

–> It’s harder than it looks coz it’s FAST

That’s what I get up to when I’m not reading/writing/studying. The one thing I loathe about anything writing-related, is the amount of time one can spend sitting one one’s arse…I like to move. I like physical activity (random dance + swimming + yoga = top choices). I hate it when my joints feel stiff and/or inflexible. I hate staring at a screen for hours. I don’t think there are very many activities that are more unhealthy than the latter, lol.

By the way, I never realized how cool an album “Blood on the Dance Floor” [BotDF MJ / Michael Jackson] was/is too. I passed it so many times in Singapore when I used to amble around CD shops…finally got a copy here for $5 on a whim the other day. Man, I think the album is more bad than “Bad”! I currently own 4 MJ albums and will be getting the remaining 3 soon ["Off The Wall", "History" and "Invincible"]…R.I.P Mr. Michael Jackson.

Over Thanksgiving break, I had the opportunity to attend a Chris Brown concert with my lovely neice Naomi. I was absolutely thrilled because this young man is the consummate performer and his music gives me the kind of chills I got when I first heard the music of young Michael Jackson. As a child I was struck by the idea that Michael Jackson was here on earth to make people HAPPY!

Poor Chris Brown is a grounded angel to me. He fell to earth after being provoked by that devilish looking Rihanna. Am I biased? Absolutely. Who knows what really happened in that car months ago? Wow! I just got back from class, and realized that one month from tonight I’ll be bringing in 2010 in Montreal!!! As you can see from my last few posts, I’ve had some amazing career endeavors come to mind by listening to my heart, and everything is coming together! I’m busting my butt to get my book done, and it’s right on schedule

I’m certainly pleased with how far I’m going in life, one step at a time. I hope to inspire others out there through my book, my career as a social worker/Ph.D./Who knows, since I know that’s where my heart is at. While it’s taken one hell of a long time to get here, the view is so very satisfying and awe-inspiring. After all, I never imagined myself where I am today.

Michael Jackson’s Thriller

Michael Jackson’s Thriller is a 14-minute movie and a music video for the song of the same name released on December 2, 1983 and directed by John Landis, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jackson. Guinness World Records listed it in 2006 as the “most successful music video”, selling over 9 million units.

Often referred to as the greatest music video ever, Thriller proved to have a profound effect on popular culture, and was named “a watershed moment for the [music] industry” for its unprecedented merging of filmmaking and music.

“Thriller” was the first Michael Jackson music video to feature the logos for Columbia Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Epic Records Productions at the beginning. It was less a conventional music video and more a full-fledged short subject or mini-film: a horror film homage featuring choreographed zombies performing with Jackson. The music was re-edited to match the video, with the verses being sung one after the other followed by the ending rap from Vincent Price, then the main dance sequence to an instrumental loop, and a climactic dance segment with Jackson singing the choruses. During the video, Jackson transforms into both a werewolf and a zombie; familiar territory for Landis, who had directed An American Werewolf in London two years earlier. The video was also a crossover because MTV at the time did not regularly air black musicians. Jackson became one of the first African American musicians to prominently feature on the station.

The problem with being a superstar is that all eyes are focused on you. One small move and it is already documented, talked about and dissected. So you can just imagine what Michael Jackson had to go through when through the years his appearance started to change.

MJ started to change his look drastically. And this was no simple hairdo makeover or fashion change. Michael grew up in front of many people as the lead singer of the Jacksons 5 when he was very young – and it is well-established that he is of African-American descent.

But by the mid-1980s, the changes were harder to ignore. His skin tone started to become whiter and whiter. His nose suffered an injury while he was working on a musical project. Because of this he underwent rhinoplasty or nose surgery. He was also observed to have undergone a forehead lift, cheekbone surgery and an altering of the lips. This was even more marked during his later years: his hair was now straight; his entire body was of a white skin tone, his lips seemed to have enlarged a bit and he had a cleft chin put up.

Imagine by the year 1990, close friends of Michael Jackson have estimated that he already had ten cosmetic procedures. If that was a fast trend for him, just how many more did he do after 19 years?

A friend of Michael for 20 years, Dr. Deepak Chopra had this to say: “What became his compulsion with cosmetic surgery was an expression of self-mutilation, a total lack of respect for himself.”

In a move that is still being argued as just a PR move, MJ was said to have been diagnosed in the mid-1980s to have the condition called vitiligo. This announcement was pronounced in the midst of rumors that he was bleaching his skin. Vitiligo is a condition where patches of skin seem to lose its melanin and become a bit white.

Michael has also been said to have the lethal condition, “Michael Jackson“, that is lupus which made him sensitive to sunlight. Because of this he depended on Solaquin, Tretinoin and Benoquin to compensate. He was also applying hydroxychloroquine injections in his scalp for the same purpose.

According to J. Randy Taraborrelli, these medications contributed to his paler skin.

His weight also plummeted down because he had this desire to be in a dancer’s body, so to speak. His lowest weight was at 105 pounds and mind you, he was five foot eleven.

Another issue with Michael has been his dependence on prescription drugs especially painkillers and strong sedatives. Because of these, it has been widely observed that his health deteriorated. MJ admitted this in 1993 when he said that he was taking painkillers Valium, Xanax and Ativan to try to compensate with the stress of dealing with the child sexual abuse charges hailed against him.

Right at this time, MJ was said to have lost about ten pounds and has stopped eating regularly. He would then be observed to be drowsy and lacked concentration. This then triggered speculations that MJ was suffering from anorexia nervosa.

In fact, in 1995 Michael Jackson was rushed to the hospital after collapsing during rehearsals, “Michael Jackson“, for a televised performance which was subsequently cancelled. This is why during the onset of the news that MJ was now dead, several showbiz gossip columnists such as Perez Hilton dismissed it as a publicity stunt – because it had a precedent.

But as it turned out it was no joke or PR campaign. It was real. The King of Pop succumbed early and was gone too soon.

Janet starts the night off wonderfully in my honest opinion. She danced and ended with “Together Again” a song about one of her friends who passed from AIDS but the lyrics were so appropriate for Michael. RIP King of Pop, your sister made you proud tonight.

If you don’t know by now, know that I’m a Lady GaGa fan. I love her and I believe she was great tonight! Some people on Twitter complain about her but how boring would this world be if everyone performed like each other? Don’t compare her to Rihanna. That’s disrespectful; live with the fact that Beyonce does her thing as does Rihanna, Brandy and any other artist out there. Variety isn’t bad people.

Shakira! Shakira! (In my best Wyclef voice) I thought her performance was interesting. The stepshow in the beginning threw me off for a little but it was cool. What HBCU did she go to for those moves? Very cool.

Rihanna…*sigh* I like her, I do but she’s really turned to the dark side! I’m worried about the girl. The songs I’ve heard from the album are all dark and dreary. If it works for her then hey, I can’t complain. Her album drops this Tuesday November 24, 2009.

The fuckery of the night in my book, Taylor Swift winning what 5 awards? When will the sympathy votes end? Kayne is somewhere punching the daylights out of a punching bag. He boosted her career. Yes, I know she was doing well before the Kanye outburst, but seriously, “The Kanye Effect” has benefited her more than anything. Tonight on Twitter I stated that she could sneeze in a movie and win an Oscar. Seriously, I believe it and if these sympathy votes keep going on, it will happen! And how did this little girl beat MJ for entertainer of the year? She didn’t sell more records than the King of Pop. UGH! Where is Kanye when you need him?!

Någon snubbe från Hong Kong, King Kongs hemstad, köpte häromdan Michael Jackons handske (den här) på en auktion. Hur mycket är det vettigt att lägga på en handske som Michael har haft på sig? Jag bryr mig inte om du svarar på den frågan eller inte, för killen lade 2,5 miljoner kronor på handsken och det är absolut inte vettigt. Vad ska man göra med en handske som man betalat 2,5 miljoner för? Använder man den? Jag skulle inte må bra om jag gick runt med 2,5 miljoner i handen (wait, whut?). Jag var så förbryllad över det här att jag ringde Janet för att fråga vad grejen med handsken är. Hon sa att man, när man har den på handen, kan ta på hur många barn som helst utan att bli fälld. Så den är ungefär som ringen i Sagan om Ringen, men lite mindre passande att göra en jultrilogi om.

Well I wanted to do a Wayback Wed but i was told that today is Thursday, I digress. Fact is…I love older music than the new noise that’s being shoved at us 24/7 by Clear Channel & Radio One. This is where my Ipod and good ol’ computer (named Jimi Jules Basquiat) comes in. Both are an instant gateway into the yesteryear of great musicdom (new word alert). To start off this momentous addition to The (Re)Fresh Button, I give you:

Hearing this song at a young age got me into older soul music. At the time I’d say I was listening to Hammer, NWA Ghetto Boys etc and had just written off my parents music as “Old Folks music”. We live and we learn though so I am glad I got a slap to the back of the head from Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, Al Green and countless others who would come to shape my thoughts on what timeless music should sound like.

I’m feeling a little better today. For the last two days, I was a literal basket case. I couldn’t function. I literally laid in bed, too tired to move. I tried logging onto Max Jax, but I could barely put two words together. Today, though, I can sit upright and type. I go see the nutritionist in Joliet today, for a pre-op visit. I keep getting stuff from the surgeon’s office saying they don’t have any of my stuff, although I know my doctor has sent it all in. I’m going to have to do it myself. I’ll call the clinic this morning to see that they’ve sent it. And have a copy sent to me, so I can double send it. I really need this to go through. So much is riding on it.

I’d like to go see This Is It again today, too. It gets harder with every time though. I cry through all of Thriller, because I know that was one of his last ones. I still really miss him. Really, really miss him. You never know how important someone really is until they are gone. God, I miss you Mike.
